On Friday, the Nigerian Federal Government will start applications for its three million digital skill empowerment initiative. Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, said this on Wednesday during a fireside chat hosted by TechCabal at Moonshot.
He also stated that the application will be for both trainers and individuals seeking technical skills. He revealed that the program’s first phase would target 30,000 Nigerians. Tijani went on to say, “Starting from this Friday, you will see applications being released for both trainers and those who want to be fellows.”
In his roadmap, the minister recently revealed a goal to train three million Nigerians in technology over the next four years. “Our commitment to talent development is unwavering,” he stated. Over the next four years, we have established an ambitious objective of training three million early to mid-career technical talent.”
The minister argued that his idea was achievable while highlighting Andela’s accomplishment in Nigeria. According to him, the ministry plans to begin modest and gradually expand. “So everything we’re going to do, we won’t start by saying we want to train 3 million people,” he explained. The method we’ll take is to start with 1% of that in the first zero to three months.”
“The model will be that we start with 1% of our 3 million target and that will run for the first three months,” he added. And that 1% will amount to 30,000 people. It appears to be a lot. But one thing we’ve done is broken down the 30,000 into the 36 states of the country.
