Dr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu, the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank Plc, has been awarded the ‘Best Banking CEO of the Year in Africa’ in the International Banker 2023 Banking Awards.
Onyeagwu was honored alongside other individuals and banks from the Middle East and Africa at the International Banker 2023 Banking Awards. The award was published in the Spring 2023 issue of the International Banker Magazine.
Onyeagwu thanked the publishers of the International Banker for awarding him the ‘Best Banking CEO of the Year in Africa’ award. He said that he was grateful for the recognition and that he would continue to work hard to improve the banking sector in Africa.
He dedicated the award to Founder and Chairman, Jim Ovia, for his guidance and mentorship, the bank’s management team and staff for being the foundation of his achievements and success as CEO, and the bank’s customers for making Zenith Bank their bank of choice.
“Dr. Onyeagwu has led Zenith Bank to great accomplishments and milestones in financial performance (including an increase of 47% in the bank’s market capitalization in just four years), financial inclusion, corporate governance, and sustainability.
“These efforts have resulted in numerous local and international accolades and recognitions, including Tier-1 Capital’s commendation of the bank as Nigeria’s top bank for the 13th year in a row in its 2022 Top 1000 World Banks Ranking;
“Bank of the Year (Nigeria) in The Banker’s Bank of the Year Awards 2020 and 2022; Best Bank in Nigeria, for three consecutive years from 2020 to 2022, in Global Finance World’s Best Banks Awards.”
As the Group Managing Director/CEO of Zenith Bank, he has contributed to the expansion of the financial services industry in Nigeria and across the African continent. He was awarded a doctorate degree in business administration in March by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria’s first indigenous university. The honor was presented at the University’s 50th convocation event.
