NIGERIA, G7 URGES CEASE FIRE BETWEEN IRAN AND ISRAEL

On Sunday, April 14, 2024, Nigeria and other G7 counterparts urged Iran and Israel to ceasefire amidst escalating tensions.

In a televised report from Daniel Hagari, an Israeli army spokesman says over 300 drones and missiles were fired toward Israel, leaving at least 12 people injured. Iranian Revolutionary Guards revealed that the attack was a retaliation for a deadly April 1 drone strike on its Damascus consulate. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards further stated that a drone and missile attack was underway against Israel.

However, the G7 countries urged Iran and Israel to exercise restraint to avoid further destabilizing the Middle East. In a statement signed by the spokesperson of the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Francisca Omayuli, on Sunday, April 14, 2024, he revealed that many measures have been taken to curb and prevent conflict from escalating to the Middle East.

Omayuli advised both nations to resolve their differences for global peace and security. In a statement released on Sunday, “The Federal Government of Nigeria joins other Members of the International Community to call on Iran and Israel to exercise restraint, as diplomatic efforts are ongoing to ease tension and avoid a broader conflict in the Middle East.

“In this critical period, it behooves the two countries to reflect on the universal commitment to peaceful conflict resolution for the advancement of global peace and security.”

Also, the President of the European Commission, Ursula Leyen, called on Iran to “immediately cease” attacks, saying in a message on X, formerly Twitter, that “all actors must now refrain from further escalation and work to restore stability in the region.”

The G7 group has shown its full support to Israel and her people. It reaffirms its security support towards ensuring their victory.

The G7 group consists of the United States, Japan, Germany, France, Britain, Italy, and Canada.
