In response to recent claims, MTN Nigeria has asserted that it has no intentions of reconsidering its decision to lease 2,500 of its tower sites to American Tower Corporation (ATC). This statement contradicts a report by Reuters suggesting that the former tower contractor, IHS, was gearing up to present a more favorable offer to regain the contract.
MTN emphasized that ATC secured the contract through a highly competitive bidding process, with no offers from IHS. The decision to award the lease to ATC was made public in September after a thorough and transparent procurement process.
Addressing the misinformation, Tobechukwu Okigbo, MTN Nigeria’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, stated, “The agreement with ATC over the 2,500 sites is final, having gone through a rigorous process involving our highest governance approvals. We always prefer bilateral renewal, subject to competitive pricing and terms. In this instance, the ATC proposal was superior.”
MTN expressed its openness to engage with IHS on future opportunities, including renewing towers in 2025. Okigbo rejected claims that transitioning to ATC would lead to network disruptions or have adverse environmental effects. He clarified that tower transfers between infrastructure companies do not necessarily disrupt networks and expressed confidence in ATC’s plans for a smooth transition.
Through the partnership with ATC, MTN aims to usher in a new era of connectivity in Nigeria, aligning with customer demands and emphasizing expense efficiencies, sustainability, and environmental responsibility. Okigbo stressed that ATC’s commitment to adhering to regulatory guidelines set by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) is crucial.
“We are deeply committed to achieving net-zero emissions, and part of the differentiated value ATC provides is a commitment to operating green sites, ensuring a significant reduction in carbon emissions. Contrary to allegations of harmful environmental impact, the partnership with ATC will reduce greenhouse gases,” Okigbo added.
