In a strategic move aimed at harnessing cutting-edge expertise, Nigeria has embarked on a mission to enlist the world’s foremost scientists of Nigerian ancestry to contribute to the formulation of its National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy.
This endeavor aims to play a pivotal role in guiding the government’s approach to harnessing innovative technological solutions for its most critical national challenges. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, revealed that the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is already in the process of formulating a comprehensive National AI Strategy.
As a part of this effort, the government is adopting a collaborative approach by meticulously selecting a roster of distinguished AI researchers with Nigerian heritage from around the world.
This development is of great significance as AI has rapidly evolved into a versatile technology capable of revolutionizing production processes, service delivery, and potentially reshaping social progress and economic advancement.
Projections suggest that by 2030, AI could contribute a staggering $15.7 trillion to the global economy. Of this, $3 trillion is expected to result from heightened productivity, while $9.1 trillion could stem from the emergence of novel goods and services.
In a related initiative, Kashifu Inuwa, the Director-General of NITDA, recently unveiled plans to establish vibrant AI developer communities across Nigeria to shape the nation’s technological landscape.
He revealed that the initiative is set to commence in three states during 2023, with a subsequent plan or expansion into additional states and eventually encompassing local government areas.
This visionary step underlines Nigeria’s commitment to fostering an ecosystem that drives technological innovation and positions the nation at the forefront of AI-driven advancements.
