TWITTER REMOVES ” STATE AFFILIATED” AND “GOVERNMENT FUNDED” TAGS FOR MEDIA ACCOUNTS

Government-funded and state-affilliated labels of the social media platform, Twitter, has been removed. This removal was necessary because it suggests the involvement of government in published article contents.

The Government-funded media label has been dropped from the twitter accounts of National Public Radio (NPR), a US-based radio station, British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).

The China state-affilliated media label on Xinhua News account has also been removed, this include accounts of journalists related to government-supported broadcasting companies.

Although, the Chinese publishers’ accounts started acquiring the tag in the year 2020, other broadcasting bodies like NPR and CBC got their tag at the beginning of the month.

NLR and CBC have stopped all activities on their individual accounts. The two broadcasting organization also noted that the label did not particularly capture their governing structure.

The CEO of Twitter, Elon Musk, stated that the attempt is made to make the platform accurate.

On Thursday, the social media platform also dropped the blue tick verification from numbers of account. Many of these accounts belongs to celebrities, eminent politicians and journalists’ account such as Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, Kim Kardashian and Bill Gates.
